Review

Helping Kids Deal with Conflict is notable for its clarity,
cohesiveness, and broadly based approach to the issue of conflict
resolution. The author discusses the nature and sources of conflict, and
typical responses to conflict; offers guidelines for modeling and
teaching conflict-resolution skills; and presents strategies for
developing self-esteem and assertiveness skills. Sheanh supports the
“enabler” approach to teaching and parenting, an approach that
places a premium on mature, rule-governed behavior on the part of
children, while communicating warmth, acceptance, and a willingness to
let children make decisions and take risks. This excellent practical
guide to conflict manage-ment will benefit teachers and parents alike.
