Review

These anthologies comprise a selection of short stories from submissions
made by literary

magazines across Canada, including The New Quarterly, Prism
International, and Prairie Fire. The Journey Prize of $10,000, made
possible by James Michener’s generous donation of royalties from his
novel Journey, is awarded annually to the writer of the best short story
in the anthology. The first Journey Prize Anthology was published in
1989.

For each anthology, a well-known writer assists in the selection
process. In Volume 5, it is Guy Vanderhaeghe, in Volume 6 Douglas
Glover. The dozen or so short stories that make up each volume are
wonderfully well written and collectively embrace a wide range of
characters and experiences. Volume 5 emphasizes character and plot,
while mood and setting figure prominently in Volume 6. This anthology
provides a welcome boost for new, young, Canadian writers.
