Review

These 20 riveting short stories about life in Northern Ontario today
deal with depressing themes without depressing the reader, and though
restricted to one geographical region are universal in their appeal.
Cigarette smuggling, alcoholism, the plight of the Native peoples,
clear-cutting forests, and poverty are all touched upon. “The Summer
Boys” is an especially humorous tale of a amateur baseball team named
The Doo Daws from Outer Space and its battles both with alcohol and with
a competing team, aptly named The Corporate Raiders. The collection as a
whole is entertaining and highly recommended.
