Review

This is Meikle’s second paperback spin-off from her weekly CBC radio
spot; and, like the first, Dear Answer Lady, it has great appeal for the
incurably curious.

Why do people buy newspaper ads thanking St. Jude? Why does Coffeemate
blow up? Why do we wrap Christmas presents? These and more than 50 other
perplexing issues from everyday life are answered by this dedicated
researcher with the quirky sense of the ridiculous. Why do we get ear
wax? How does a Nintendo Zapper work? What do men wear under their
kilts? Meikle provides answers and explanations to these and other
equally critical questions and occasionally comments on the research
process that led to unearthing the information.

In addition to being a great source of cocktail party trivia, the
book’s short, light essays make it good emergency entertainment for
wet days at the cottage or long bus trips. It would make a fun gift for
information collectors and trivia buffs.
