Review

This handbook for expectant/new parents is aimed particularly at
first-time parents. The writers assume that their audience may have
little or no previous information on the topics presented, but are
careful to write with respect, and without condescension. The book is
full of useful information on pregnancy, nutrition, birth,
breast-feeding, baby care, and emotional issues. Because the book is the
product of a provincial ministry, however, the reader should not expect
much discussion on alternatives like midwifery (not mentioned), or
dissenting information on controversial issues such as episiotomy and
circumcision. The guide is a reasonably good primer, but thoughtful
parents with many questions will need to look for additional sources of
information.
