Review
This anthology of prose treatments of youth features contributions by
such well-known authors as Margaret Laurence, Guy Vanderhaeghe, Alice
Munro, Margaret Atwood, Sinclair Ross, and Marian Engel. Spanning the
years from early childhood to late adolescence, the selections begin
with Robertson Davies’s description of a toddler’s introduction to
kindergarten (from What’s Bred in the Bone) and end with Hugh Hood’s
story about a boy’s experiences in his high-school band (from Flying a
Red Kite). The attractively produced volume provides a charming and
evocative record of growing up in Canada over the past 50 years.
