Review

Set in contemporary Toronto, this fast-paced and hilarious first novel
centres on the adventures of Mitchell Draper, an aspiring young
screenwriter who earns his living doing temp work and writing gay
pornography while awaiting his “big break” into show business. When
a mysterious woman approaches him with a request for a script and a
promise of fame, his journey into the worlds of crime and passion
begins. The book, which consists of a series of Mitchell’s journal
entries by interspersed with excerpts from a screenplay, also chronicles
the lives of Mitchell’s two closest friends: Ingrid, an artist, and
Ramir, an actor who, like Mitchell, is gay.

Authentic dialogue, likable and well-rounded characters, and humor that
runs the gamut from understated wit to slapstick are among this
novel’s many strengths. There are many sharp insights into the worlds
of Canadian art, entertainment, and business. The joys and agonies of
the creative process, expressed through Mitchell’s attempts at
writing, shine through on this first-rate book.
