Review

In February 1997, the Nova Scotia government lifted the protected status
on a remote Cape Breton bog to accommodate mining interests. Government
decisions of this type have been turning the once famous Nova Scotia
wilderness into an environmental scandal. This book is a plea for
wilderness protection.

An earlier book by Mike Parker, Guides of the North Woods, recounted an
oral history of this wilderness area by the guides who led visitors
through it. Where Moose and Trout Abound, a companion volume, relates
the reminiscences of some of the people who were guided through these
woods during the halcyon days of abundant game and plentiful fish. The
author garnishes the stories with photographs of the era.

Whether or not this book becomes a useful tool in the fight to protect
Nova Scotia’s wilderness, these nostalgic stories are interesting to
read on their own.
