Review

Sylvia Tyson and Tom Russell are well qualified to edit a book that
explores the art of songwriting. Tyson was part of the landmark folk and
country duo Ian and Sylvia before establishing herself as a solo artist
and later with the singer/songwriters of Quartette, while Russell has
achieved success as a performer and songwriter whose songs have been
recorded by Johnny Cash and Nancy Griffith. Their anecdote-filled book
covers topics ranging from the source of a songwriter’s inspiration to
“chicken soup and the meaning of life,” and profiles songwriters as
diverse as Stephen Sondheim and Jimi Hendrix. It also paints a
compelling picture of Tyson and Russell as artists in their own right.
