Review

For more than 30 years, Canon Bill McCarthy, the Anglican cleric known
to many Montrealers as “the Rev,” served as director of the
venerable Old Brewery Mission, guiding it to its place as a vibrant and
relevant ministry dedicated to helping the casualties of contemporary
urban life. In remarkably vivid memoirs, Canon McCarthy chronicles his
service to Montreal’s disenfranchised. Pervading the book—which
offers a devastating portrait of the effects of government cutbacks on
the poor—is a sense of the author’s deep, practical Christian faith,
and more than a touch of his Irish disposition.
