Review

In 1942, the author of this memoir—a 9-year-old at the
time—contracted a severe case of polio. The assistance of others
(including therapists, doctors, friends, and, especially, his mother),
along with his own determination and courage, enabled Hebb to achieve a
measure of independence. At 24, he was accepted as a commerce student at
Dalhousie University. After graduation, it was some time before he found
employment in the field of management, where he remained for the next 33
years. Throughout his career, he worked at bringing other people with
disabilities into the mainstream. He also married, raised two daughters,
and cultivated a large circle of friends.

Wheels to Victory would have been inspirational had the bitterness Hebb
feels over his retirement not spilled over into the narrative.
