Review

You can have anything, but you cannot have everything.

Cunningham presents personal and family budgeting as a matter of
choices. You can spend you money for this or for that. It’s your
money, and your choice. Just be aware that each choice has consequences.
For many choices, the consequences are debt and a loss of control over
future decisions. Budgeting, Cunningham says, helps you see those
consequences before you make your choices. She maintains that the hard
work of budgeting is preferable to the alternative.

The book separates itself from the dozens of others available on the
subject in two ways. First, Cunningham’s three-step budget form
presents an innovative way to deal with the problem of budget expenses
that cross over several pay periods. Secondly, her chapter on teaching
children to budget is exceptionally strong.

A Dollar in Your Pocket is a quick, painless read and refreshing in
style and ideas.
