Review

Compact and lavishly illustrated with color photographs, this guidebook
to Manitoba is divided into five major sections. Included in the first
three sections—“The Land,” “Heritage,” and “Recreation,
Culture and Entertainment” (which are so thoroughly written that they
would not be out of place in an encyclopedia)—are interesting
discussions of such topics as “Manitoba Mosquitoes,” “The Winnipeg
General Strike,” and “The Great Flood of 1950.” The final two
sections, “Winnipeg” and “Manitoba’s Regions,” contain
where-to-go and what-to-see information for tourists and are
supplemented by maps. The book’s last 20 pages list places to stay,
dine, shop, and visit and provide addresses of places to obtain more
detailed current information. The volume combines the work of 22
well-qualified contributors and is highly recommended for visitors to
the “keystone” province.
