Review

Northern British Columbia occupies two-thirds of the province, a vast
area stretching north from approximately the level of 100 Mile House.
Its boundaries are not formally defined, but it is clearly a different
world from the narrow band along the Canada–U.S. border that contains
most of the province’s major population centres and its best-known
tourist attractions.

The intention of this guide is to introduce recreational travelers to
the best the North has to offer—“locations that offer excellent
service, good value for money, and an introduction to the people and
culture of Northern British Columbia.” The area is divided into eight
regions: Cariboo-Chilcotin, Prince George, Nechako and Bulkley Valleys,
Robson Valley, North Coast, Queen Charlotte Islands, Peace
River–Alaska Highway, and the Stikine and Far Northwest. Each region
is introduced with a map, a brief history, and a description of access
routes and public transportation. The “very best of” section that
follows is arranged by community, and for each one includes places to
eat, places to stay, and interesting sites and activities in the area.
Names, addresses, telephone and fax numbers, travel directions, and
price-range indications are given. The authors’ notes about the
facilities and services, based on first-hand experiences, will help the
traveler choose destinations and routes. The guide is well indexed,
concise, and easy to use. It offers vacationers and other travelers a
friendly and helpful introduction to this vast and relatively unexplored
area of British Columbia.
