Review

Black bears, polar bears, and grizzly bears are the focus of this book,
which also profiles some of the people who study bears, live in bear
country, or work to protect bears. Individual chapters on each species
of bear provide basic biological information and address conservation
issues. The book begins with an introductory chapter on bears in our
natural world and concludes with a practical chapter on how to watch
bears without becoming part of a bear-kill statistic.

Interspersed throughout are interesting sidebars. These include a
review of the history of Smokey the Bear, a description of preparing and
eating bear meat, and a no-nonsense story about rancher Keith Everts and
his experience with a bear family that was living close to his herd of
cattle.

Almost every page has a bear photo, and they add up to a book that is
packed with beautiful and often spectacular images. This well-written,
practical guide should be read by everyone who visits or lives in bear
country.
