Review

This guide to preparing students for the challenges ahead delivers less
than it promises. In lieu of original analysis, the book relies heavily
on the views of others (there are 10 quotations in the first three pages
alone). The author describes various approaches to fostering
problem-solving and social skills in a program or curriculum.
Unfortunately, she focuses too much on basic strategies such as word
webs and too little on more sophisticated techniques such as Think bowl
and Q-approach.

Although Lake’s descriptions of the contextual uses of specific
literature and computer software provide a useful reference for
teachers, her book as a whole offers limited insights and opportunities
for student engagement and instruction.
