Review

Chintz is tableware characterized by an overall floral pattern. This 3rd
edition of the reference work cherished by chintz collectors opens with
a fascinating essay on the changes in the field during the last two or
three years. The impact of the Internet, including electronic auctions
and Web sites for chintz collectors, has brought new excitement to the
hobby. An even more surprising development—the production of new
chintzware—has widened the potential for collectors. Distinguishing
features of this edition include listings of this newly produced chintz
and a section on new shapes for products from the James Kent factory.

The extensive introduction to chintz includes a history of its
evolution and of the leading chintz manufacturers, the collecting
environment today, and advice for collectors, especially those
purchasing through the Internet.

The inclusion of color photos of both the pattern and the backstamp for
the listings of hundreds of patterns make this catalog tremendously
valuable to collectors. Details for each listing include manufacturer,
shape, and value in Canadian, U.S., and U.K. currency. Size is also
given for many items. The listings are divided into vintage and new
chintz and subdivided within these broad groupings by manufacturer.

The extensive section on shapes includes hundreds of items, most in
color, and allows collectors to become familiar with such sought-after
pieces as toast racks, egg-cruet sets, tea sets, trays, jam pots,
biscuit barrels, candy dishes, and candle sticks.

Richly detailed, The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Chintz provides
tremendous coverage of the field. To collect chintz without this
reference is inconceivable.
