Review

Like all types of cancer, prostate cancer doesn’t affect just the
person who has it. Of her husband’s prostate cancer, Audrey Newton
writes that “[it] invaded every aspect of our daily lives—our
working, eating and sleeping habits, our sex lives, and our
relationships with family and friends.”

This book chronicles how Audrey and Victor Newton lived with Victor’s
prostate cancer. It is a depressingly familiar story, involving
pre-diagnostic fears, negative encounters with caregivers, the trials of
nonconventional therapies, and the continual struggles against
depression. In addition to telling a personal story, the book conveys
factual information about prostate cancer and its treatment.

Despite some occasionally jarring transitions between the informational
and personal material, Living with Prostate Cancer paints a moving
portrait of a couple that faced terrible adversity with dignity and
quiet heroism.
