Review

White Noise is the latest in a series of mystery novels by Eve Zaremba
featuring lesbian private investigator Helen Keremos, who is now getting
on in years and beginning to question her dedication to this career.

Nevertheless, she rises to the occasion, which involves Sonny, a scam
artist and Vietnam vet who’s been hanging out in Hong Kong since the
war. He has fled to Vancouver to escape two groups that are after him.
Naturally, they follow, and Keremos and her naive girlfriend Julie get
caught up in the intrigue.

Zaremba creates a fictional island, Sabriola, where Keremos has old
friends who help hide Sonny. The island sub-plot had potential for
development that was not realized, but perhaps Zaremba is saving it for
a future novel.

The novel does not quite work; there is nobody for the reader to
identify with, not even Helen, who seems distant and not quite herself.
Still, it is a mildly entertaining yarn with a somewhat contrived
ending.
