Review
From their Nova Scotian mothers and grandmothers, Margaret Conrad and
Heather MacDonald learned that ginger transforms the ordinary into the
exotic. Moreover, it adds few calories and little fat. This attractive
cookbook features 150 ginger recipes.
The introduction traces the history of ginger through folklore and
medicinal uses. (Conrad and MacDonald have come up with uses of their
own.) The recipes, which indicate calories per serving, are organized
under the headings drinks, appetizers, breads, soups, vegetables,
desserts, and Christmas cakes. “Breads” include Ginger Walnut Tea
Biscuits, Ginger Scones, and Lardy Bread. A section titled “Ginger
Vocabulary” describes the ways to prepare fresh ginger. Ink drawings
and kitchen hints are also featured.
The Joy of Ginger would make a great personal or gift purchase.
