Review

The other eight parts in this series, published between 1977 and 1980, covered bark beetles, crab spiders, mosquitoes, plant bugs, and so forth. This one concerns the two-clawed hunting spiders which have a world-wide fauna of 1,500 species. Covered are details on anatomy, family characteristics, and reproductive modes, along with the necessary drawings and a glossary of terms. The entire series, when viewed as a whole, is based mainly on insect and spider collections in Ottawa, Toronto, Victoria, Vancouver, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Halifax, and even Harvard University and New York City. The intent has been the collecting, preparing, and preserving of insects, mites, and spiders, with a view to being comprehensive and thorough in a scholarly manner. These are not field guides, although the ranges for all species in Canada are noted. The work concludes with an extensive series of bibliographic references.
