Review
These collected readings, suitable for senior high school students on college students, concern the social history of Canada. Volume one, concerning New France to 1760, was previously published (and hence is not reviewed here); volume four will deal with the Depression, while volume five will cover the welfare state, 1930-1981. Each book has the same general topics: economic development, politics, religion, social structure, working, women and children. Each book has at least one scholarly article (chosen from a wide variety of sources) for each of the general topics as it pertains to the time period. Thus, there is H.A. Innis’s staples theory (1930), F. Ouellet’s social history of Quebec (1968), D. Morton’s work on peacekeeping forces (1976). Comments are made about each reading, along with biographical notes about the author and a bibliography for further reading.
