Review

The first edition of this college text appeared in 1949, the third in 1968. Professor McInnis, a respected scholar on Canadian international matters, died in 1973 and the book was allowed to go out of print. This fourth edition is basically unchanged except for a new concluding chapter of fifty pages or so, written by Michiel Horn (bringing the “history” down from 1968 through 1981), and an updated and revised bibliography. The 1969 map on pp. viii-ix should also have been updated.

Basically, this is a routine text, often used for undergraduate courses. It is a balanced account of the growth of Canada, with no controversial points of view. A good choice for a one-volume account of Canadian history in the public library.
