Review

Thanks to such earlier successes as Vanishing Vancouver (1990) and
Vancouver the Way It Was (1984), award-winning artist and writer Michael
Kluckner’s name is strongly associated with Vancouver’s heritage
buildings and their neighborhoods.

This latest volume has a different focus: contemporary Vancouver and
its surrounding communities as seen in all their seasonal and weather
variations. Kluckner spent a year observing the city and capturing its
moods in delicate grey-toned watercolors. Sixty-five of these original
city portraits and more than 40 miniatures of Vancouverites viewed going
about their day-to-day activities are reproduced in the book.
Complementary texts describe the history and character of the scenes and
neighborhoods, creating word pictures that are as evocative as the
watercolors themselves. This is Michael Kluckner at his best: subtle,
whimsical, and very much in love with his city.
