Set in and around Kingston, Ontario, this novel focuses on one summer in the life of its central characters. As the story unfolds, the quiet peacefulness of a long, hot summer is steadily disturbed then forcibly shattered by a strange combination of characters and circumstances. For some it is a summer which brings new happiness, for others only anger, jealousy, or final despair; and for one it brings death.
This is a well-written novel that has been thoughtfully planned and well executed. In it, the author has succeeded in creating a memorable story which he admirably recounts in a flowing, descriptive style packed with some very powerful visual imagery. As impressive as the author’s descriptive powers are his strong characterizations. The characters that appear in this novel are real and well developed, and they are effectively introduced and utilized by the author in the development of his story line. The end result is a fine new novel.
David Helwig is a well-known Canadian author and poet. This is the fourth novel in his Kingston tetralogy.
