Review

This selected bibliography, Nutrition and Aging, is one of the publications produced by the Nutrition Information Service, a section of the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute Library, Toronto. Barbara St. Clair and Sandra Wong, students in the Food, Nutrition and Family Studies Program at Ryerson, compiled over 750 entries in this bibliography, including journal articles, books, pamphlets, bibliographies, journals, and associations relating to nutrition and aging. With the exception of a few key materials, references were drawn from the years 1977 to 1981.

The bibliography covers much more than nutrition and aging per se. It is divided into seven main sections: Biology of Aging, Nutritional Implications of Aging, Nutritional Programs, Meal Planning and Food Preparation, Bibliographies, Journals, and Associations. These sections are then divided into subsections, which cover such topics as theories of aging, common pathologies of aging, nutritional status (vitamins, minerals and other nutrients), socio-economic factors, etc. Each section and subsection begins with an introduction, followed with journal and then book references. The book references include prices. There is no index, however; perhaps this could be a consideration in future reprints. The Biology of Aging section is particularly extensive and well done, covering all pertinent topics, from constipation to osteoporosis. A wealth of information is to be found in Nutrition and Aging. It would be a valuable tool for doctors, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, and anyone working with the elderly, whether in an institutional setting or at home.
