Review

This birdwatcher’s guide has been compiled by David Mark from notes detailing sites for birding, contributed by naturalists well acquainted with the relevant areas. Designed to help dedicated birders (possibly those who plan holidays in areas where they can enlarge their bird lists) it covers 81 sites in eight biotic regions. Maps showing the biotic regions are clear and uncluttered, as are the small sketch maps showing routes to specific sites. Written instructions giving directions, road numbering, and mileage (kilometre distances) are also clear and easy to comprehend. The pen-and-ink illustrations by Linda Feltner possess good pictorial qualities though the avian subjects sometimes seem slightly out of proportion. The print is small but clear, the format designed for carrying in pocket or knapsack. It would help interested if not diehard birders if the totals for the winter and summer bird counts were given for each biotic area. David Mark’s love for our spectacular B.C. countryside shows in his meticulous presentation.
