Dr. Hornsby is a psychologist, teacher, and therapist. Among her many accomplishments is the development of the Dyslexia Clinic at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital into one of the foremost such clinics in Great Britain. This book, though essentially British, as are the other titles in this invaluable series, has been modified for Canadian, American, and Australian audiences.
Firmly based on the author’s practical and theoretical experience, this book offers clear explanations of this baffling learning disorder for parents and teachers. In simple, jargon-free language she explains how to recognize this disorder, describes some of the underlying causes, and offers much explicit detail on successful treatment. She stresses again and again that there is hope for the dyslexic: after all, such famous people as Einstein, Woodrow Wilson, and General Patton, to name only a few, were dyslexic. Of paramount importance is to have the problem diagnosed and to begin proper treatment, the sooner the better. The case studies illustrate clearly typical dyslexics, the problems they encounter, and how treatment has helped them. Canadian readers will be somewhat disheartened to note that Great Britain is well ahead of us in the treatment of this disorder.
