Review

L’Arche is a predominantly Roman Catholic community devoted to helping
people with disabilities. With its emphasis on intimate, family-like
settings, l’Arche is the complete opposite of a traditional
institution.

The first l’Arche home was founded in France, in 1964, by Jean
Vanier, son of a former governor general of Canada. This volume of
letters, addressed to friends and supporters worldwide, provides a
detailed picture of l’Arche during its third decade (1984–1993).
Vanier is an indefatigable worker for his cause, conducting lectures,
seminars, prayer meetings, and retreats all over the world. L’Arche
now operates homes in some 30 countries, but as this inspiring book
makes clear, much remains to be done.
