Review

Unrevised after 21 years, this book by the late great Canadian historian W.S. MacNutt has been reissued in a paperback format to mark the 1984 Bicentennial celebrations in New Brunswick. It was republished with the assistance of the New Brunswick Bicentennial Commission. This is an important history that is still a definitive work on the subject, but surely historical research has unearthed some new data or reinterpretations of historical views. If Macmillan had wanted to mark the Bicentennial, and if the NBBC truly wanted to contribute to a history of the roots of the province, then surely they could have jointly commissioned a 25-page (or so) essay for incorporation as a foreword, a sort of updating to the book. The old Carleton Library series used to do this all the time. Instead, all we have is partial funding of a straight reprint.
