Review

The title is a little exaggerated — perhaps “longest-running treasure hunt” might be more to the point. After two hundred years of searching the treasure is still as safely hidden as it was the day it was supposedly buried. Is there a treasure at all? Many people down through the years have believed so and have spent thousands of dollars, many years, and in the case of six searchers, their very lives, looking. Today the most that can be said for all this activity is that Oak Island is a tourist attraction that draws curious visitors to the site each season.

The book could be carried along on a visit to Oak Island if one is historically interested rather than just curious. It details the legend, the various serious search attempts, and the findings these searches have brought to life. The questions still remain: Is there a treasure? Will it ever see the light of day? Who buried it? Who will be successful in discovering it — or will anyone?
