Review

This is the fifth in a series of co-publications; its companion volume, Toronto Since 1918 (by James Lemon), was released in 1985 and will be reviewed in CBRA 1985. The two books together consider the social and business history of Toronto rather than its political development. Location and people shaped Toronto, and that is Careless’s thrust. There are many, many pictures from the City of Toronto Archives and other city collections, the Metro Toronto Reference Library, the Public Archives of Canada, the Archives of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the Toronto Transit Commission. As well, there are nine maps. The bibliography is especially effective since it has a thematic arrangement: economics, population, social history, culture, urban politics, and services; and the appendices contain statistical tables through the 1921 Census. Highly enjoyable to read and a significant contribution to the Sesquicentennial Celebration of Toronto.
