Review

Since its first appearance in 1968, The Wind Has Wings has been a favourite with Canadian children as well as a critically acclaimed “star item” of Canadiana. Now comes The New Wind Has Wings, destined to win still further well-deserved admiration and praise. The anthology includes most of the poems that appeared in the earlier edition, with 19 additional pieces; the updated Index of Poets is a Canadian honour roll. Compiled by Mary Alice Downie and Barbara Robertson, collaborators who plainly complement one another’s taste with the happiest of results, these poems are such as will provide hours of joy, as well as food for thought. Every mood, every emotion finds its place within this richly textured collection. Dazzling illustrations, some boldly coloured, others stark black and white, are an added delight. A first-class anthology, to be enjoyed by thoughtful readers of all ages.
