Review

Author Betty Waterton, who lives on Vancouver Island and has written children’s stories since 1976, has established an international reputation as a children’s author. The illustrator, Karen Kulyk, has been working professionally as an artist since 1974.

This short tale for children is bound to catch youthful imaginations. It is the story of a young dragon, Orff, who cannot fly as the other dragons can. Instead, Orff goes off to a lake and becomes friendly with some fishes who have been frightened by Snarkels; of course, the good Orff scares the Snarkels off. Orff is a pleasant dragon; children will be charmed by him.

The little book is illustrated in color with large, painting-like illustrations. Green skins, white teeth, red tongues, and red snarkel skins should make this book very attractive for beginning readers. The language is simple and easy to follow.
