Review

Every child’s nightmare of a wild beast under the bed is captured in this story for beginning readers. Kevin’s wild beast is an alligator and his plight becomes one of explaining the existence of the alligator to his mother, while protecting his baby sister from attack.

Illustrator Veronika Martenova Charles has created a veritable jungle in Kevin’s room. In shades of grey and leaf green, her pictures enliven the text. Born in Prague, she studied at the Ontario College of Art and earned a degree in design from Ryerson. Her art work has appeared in films, magazines, and other publications.

Gail E. Gill lives in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. In this, her first publication, she demonstrates her skill as a very capable children’s author.
