Review

Volume One of this encyclopedia was originally published in 1981, and it was reviewed in CBRA 1981, item 1020. At that time I described the numbers involved; these have since increased. For instance, there are now 850 “consultants,” and the sources have widened to include more personal interviews and more books and magazines.

The encyclopedia is self-indexing, with copious cross-references, and I noted before that this led to some frustrations since the entire set has not yet been published. There are source lists at the end of the major articles, maps, portraits and photographs, and so forth. It is the same as before but with 200 more pages and about a quarter million more words, which cover over 1200 topics and need 1,167 illustrations. Unfortunately, the price has risen as well. Volume One was offered for $39; this volume is $30 more than that (probably because there are no ads this time).
