Review

Most noteworthy of Dr. Donsky’s many credentials are his associate professorship in dermatology at the University of Toronto, his appointment as staff dermatologist at Toronto General, and his frequent speaking and writing about his specialty.

Addressed to the lay person, this book deals with all aspects of skin care. The first six chapters focus on the skin, its care, cosmetics, environmental effects, and aging. Chapters seven to thirteen examine skin problems and solutions to these problems. Everything from acne to cancer is discussed. The next three chapters deal with hair and nails. The final chapter discusses lifestyle and its effect on the skin.

This book gets high marks from this reviewer on all counts: it answers simply, clearly, and authoritatively any question you may have on skin care and skin problems. The chart explaining the various bumps, lumps, or spots that one can encounter is the best I have ever encountered.

This oversize paperback is also well designed. There is a pleasing variation of type face. The two columns of text are broken up with line drawings, charts, lists, and boxes. The headings and the index quickly guide the reader to the information sought.

There are no miracle cures here, no magic potions and no short cuts. If you follow Dr. Donsky’s advice you will save a lot of money on products of dubious efficacy; you will, however, make the most of your skin and you may also save your own life.
