Review

One of the Sesquicentennial books of Toronto, and assisted by that Board and by the Secretary of State, this book consists of twelve essays. Robert Harney’s “Ethnicity and Neighbourhoods” sets the tone and serves as the introduction to the groups that came over in waves. The book is loosely chronological in arrangement. First is J.M.S. Careless on Cabbagetown and the WASPs, then Murray Nicolson on Irish-Catholics, Dan Hill on Blacks in Toronto, Stephen Speisman on Jews, and John Zucchi on Italians, followed by essays on the Chinese, the Macedonians, the Finns, the Poles, the Greeks, and the Ukrainians. While there are footnotes, there is no overall bibliography.
