Review

The definition of “romantic” is highly personal. It can be opulence
or simplicity, glamor and glitz or seclusion. For the authors, it is
cosy and quiet, tranquility with quality. Hence their 40-plus getaways
tend to feature lonely beaches, lacy sheets, lots of pillows and a teddy
bear, or wine sipped by candlelight.

More than most travel guides, this lively book will encourage planning
for a trip with a special partner. The possibilities run to country inns
and historic hotels, with the occasional surprise such as hot-air
ballooning, a train trip, or an ocean cruise.

The book is a compilation of personal experiences and observations,
presented in a style rich with detail. The main text on the destinations
is complemented with a flurry of sidebars: recipes, suggested side
trips, hints for lowering the cost of travel, ideas for original
souvenirs, a list of romantic wines, quotations, suggestions for giving
romance a chance to grow. Approximately half the destinations are in
Nova Scotia. The remainder are sprinkled throughout Eastern Canada, the
United States, Europe, and the Caribbean. For each destination there’s
travel directions and phone numbers, and a combined romance and price
rating. Four hearts is pricy and high in romance value.
