Review

This book first came out in 1971 as Civil Rights in Canada. This latest edition is up to date through April 7, 1985, with its inclusion of the Canadian Charter provisions. On page xvii Bolton states that this book “explains the civil rights and constitutional rights that Canadians have in dealing with the criminal justice system. The book is intended as a starting point for understanding legal rights and obligations as well as criminal laws and procedures.” Topics include: rights of suspects, the law of arrest, the procedure of arrest (booking, fingerprinting, photographing, bail, etc.), search and seizures (criminal code, income tax laws, customs), crimes and the specifics of narcotics and alcohol, weapons, immigration, trials, criminal lawyers, young offenders, electronic surveillance. A very good introduction to the field.
