Susie and Toby Rawlins live on a ranch in Colorado. After reading the story of Dr. Kevin, an Arctic researcher on Eskimo history and culture, they decide that an Alaskan husky would make an ideal pet on their ranch. They write to Dr. Kevin in Nome, Alaska, asking for information about husky sled dogs. Then they set about earning the money to purchase one, which they know will be expensive.

Unexpectedly the Arctic researcher arrives on his way to his home in Wyoming, bringing as a gift a young black-and-white husky named Chuchi. He tells the children it is a gift from himself and his Eskimo friend Egoniuk, because of the children’s interest in husky dogs. Dr. Kevin also invites Susie and Toby to visit an international conference he is organizing, next year, in Anchorage, Alaska.

The story follows Chuchi’s adventures and training as she grows up on a Colorado ranch, displaying her courage, loyalty, intelligence, and affection.

The family decide to attend the Arctic conference at Anchorage, Alaska, and set out in a camper truck. Chuchi, having wandered off during a rest stop, is wounded by wolf hunters from an aero-plane and another series of adventures ensues.

She encounters Egoniuk and is reunited with Dr. Kevin at the Arctic conference. He contacts the family, who had returned home after the loss of Chuchi. The story ends happily with the whole Rawlins family at the Denver airport when Chuchi arrives, air freight, from Anchorage.

Well illustrated with 20 black-and-white line drawings, the story will appeal to children with its fast-paced action, horses, ranch life, and Chuchi — a smart, lovable husky.
