Review

Written by an allergy expert, this primer looks at what causes
allergies, how allergies are diagnosed, and how they are treated and
managed. Specific allergies, such as food, insect, and skin allergies,
are also covered, as are asthma and complications of allergies.

This is a fine book in all respects. The material is directed at the
layperson, with complex terminology or concepts clearly defined. The
well-designed text is easy to access, with line drawings and sidebars
highlighting special information. A good glossary, an index, and a list
of further reading (with an emphasis on Canadian sources) are included.

Conventional in its focus, the guide provides little information about
unconventional treatments for allergies. However, those looking for
information about allergies or about how to manage them will find this
handbook an excellent resource.
