Review

McMaster University Archives got the records of the Macmillan Company of Canada Ltd. as the publishing firm was acquired by Gage. With the support of one of the first SSHRCC grants in aid of bibliographies, three bibliographers undertook to provide a descriptive bibliography of all of the Macmillan imprints. Here then, in chronological order, are 75 years of imprints. Some of these books were not even in the original collection, and the titles have had to be verified by Inter-library Loans (it would have been helpful if locations were included for these non-archival items; presumably this information is at McMaster).

After a short history of the company, the list begins. It has been subarranged alphabetically by author (or title where appropriate). The bibliographic elements include a transcription of the title page, collation note, series notes, and general notes. Each item has been numbered, and indexes are provided for all 2691 titles (also indexed are illustrators and series). The bibliographers admit that not everything is here. Two categories of books were very difficult to find: textbooks, and the Canadian issues of novels manufactured abroad to which the company added their own title page.
