Review

A selective bibliography concentrating on sensitive clay as a material, this work addresses those in the various soil sciences as well as geotechnical engineers. Designed to complement McKay’s bibliographic listing on the general topic of sensitive clays (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, 1979), it presents 107 references by quoting sections that include the main thrust or the conclusions of the work. Key figures or tables are included in most entries. In only a few cases do the authors add an explanatory note or cross-reference.

Entries are arranged chronologically, from 1846 to 1984, but most date from 1952. Indexes are provided by author, sub-subject, and geographic location.

This bibliography will be of value to both students and practitioners in the earth sciences, as it provides the historical development of the understanding of sensitivity in clays as a phenomenon in condensed form. In some cases, readers may find the entries sufficiently complete for their purposes and will be effectively led to references of particular significance to them.
