Review

Some books about bears focus on bear behaviors and habitats, while
others tell stories about real-life bear attacks and the consequences of
a close encounter. This one combines both approaches as it details how
to prevent bear encounters. The author reviews the activities people
undertake in the wilderness and the precautions they should take to
avoid a close-up bear experience. Camping, hiking, picnicking, and
mountain biking are covered along with the myths and realities
surrounding the risks of menstruating or having sex outdoors. The book
concludes with a chapter on pepper sprays and other last-minute
defences. The sensible advice offered in this book could help to save
not only a human life but a bear’s life as well.
