Review

In this second edition of his popular 1994 work, Campbell lays out the
realities of employment in today’s (and tomorrow’s) economy.

To set the stage, he begins with strong chapters on the dominant trends
affecting employment, which include home-based offices (telecommuting),
the influence of the Internet and World Wide Web, the focus on customer
service, and the growth of entrepreneurship and exporting.

The heart of the work is a detailed examination of job prospects in
more than 50 career fields (health, utilities, culture, manufacturing,
etc.). Campbell’s text on each prospect is insightful and packed with
real-life examples. For each field, he includes a “bulletin board”
that highlights job demand factors, areas of growth and reduction,
growth limiting factors, and contacts for further information. Working
outside Canada is also given extensive coverage, with detailed notes
organized by country.

An unusual feature that anyone involved in career planning will find
practical is a career prospects chart. This tool describes more than 150
occupations, and for each details the education and other entrance
requirements, gives the average salary (for 1996), and outlines the
projected growth/decline between 1995 and 2000.

The book makes fascinating reading, even for non–job hunters, as it
constitutes a portrait of how (and why) our world is changing. For
anyone planning a career or a career change, job hunting, or working
with the unemployed, Where the Jobs Are is a practical reference that
will get a lot of use.
