Review

Teams or workgroups are the critical building blocks in many
organizations. Success for these organizations is therefore dependent on
the effectiveness of teams. Bendaly, a training and development
consultant, uses the phrase “fit teams” to describe those teams that
have the resiliency to bound back when knocked down, that identify and
implement effective strategies leading to goal accomplishment, that
develop shared leadership and encourage the participation of all
members, and that are able to prioritize and deal with an ever-changing
environment. According to Bendaly, organizations can foster such teams
by promoting cohesiveness and openness, encouraging shared leadership,
and developing group work skills, among other things. Supplemented with
many useful tips and exercises, this well-written book is a welcome
addition to the organizational literature.
