Penguins!

Sandy Campbell is a reference librarian in the Science and Technology Library at the University of Alberta.

Images of penguins are always charming, and Wayne Lynch has taken full
advantage of that charm in a book that features many fine photographs.
Unlike many children’s natural history books, Penguins! is rich in
text. The author covers penguins in all parts of the world, describing
differences and similarities in physiology, motion, breeding, feeding,
predation, and habitat.

The tone of the book is light. Each chapter is introduced by an image
of a penguin “shouting” the chapter number. There are many personal
anecdotes and whimsical section titles such as “Flipper-flapping
fluffies.” At the same time, the content is scientifically solid. The
book concludes with an extensive index and an interesting south polar
projection map indicating the sites where each of the 17 species may be
found.

Preschoolers will enjoy this book because of the photographs. Older
children will be able to use it as a resource for studies of penguins.
Adults can learn from Penguins! as well. Highly recommended for public
or school library collections.
