Review

Grandma is supposed to be taking little Jenny and Joanna to the beach.
The girls have packed their towels, bathing suits, sunglasses, and sand
toys, but when they look out the window, all they see is rain.
Strangely, when Grandma arrives, she does not seem disappointed. She
tells them to grab their beach bags and even their dog, Max, because
dogs “are welcome at my beach!” They take a taxi to Grandma’s
apartment, spread their blankets on the living room floor, and then jump
into Grandma’s bathtub to splash and play. Afterwards, they dress up
in Grandma’s old clothes and eat their picnic lunch on their towels in
the living room. By the end of the day, the girls make up a new song:
“Rain, rain don’t go away! / Come down hard every day! / Jenny and
Joanna want to play . . . / At Grandma’s beach every day!”

This book, based on the old nursery rhyme “Rain, rain go away,” is
about how a little creativity can turn disappointment into fun.
Kovalski’s drawings are always captivating. The chubby, bespectacled
Grandma radiates love on every page. Recommended.
