Review

“If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water” (Loren
Eiseley). Diane Swanson’s book provides ample proof of this quotation,
which graces the table of contents. From the water within us to the
water in the oceans, she explores a range of phenomena adapted to and
connected with water. Swanson starts with the water within organisms and
the life within water droplets. This is followed by water bounded by
land in puddles, marshes, and lakes. Next she presents the adaptations
required by fast-moving water in rivers, and finally, explores the
oceans and their life. The story of life on earth is indistinguishable
from the story of water.

Vivid colour photographs and simple cartoon drawings enhance the
discussion. Most of the text reads like a tour narrative (“You will
see…”) sprinkled with descriptions of the rich animal life. Sidebars
provide more detail on a few of the things we see. In every chapter the
physics of water is linked to the lives of those who live in, on, and
around it, including humans. The brief index gives just one indication
of the wealth of information in the book.

The Wonder in Water is a simple, beautifully written prose poem
celebrating the magic of water and its accompanying life. Highly
recommended.
